I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for everything you have done for me for the last couple of years. I want to tell you how much I have appreciated your services and your friendship. Coming from Los Angeles, where, for many years, I have been dealing with dentists and doctors whose work is motivated only by the dollar sign, I have been mesmerized in witnessing your dedication, your ethics, your honesty and your patience in your work. Not only you have given me a lovely smile, solving many problems and working many, many hours on my mouth, but you have opened a world to me where now I know I can find a decent, honest, thorough and ethically correct human being who is practicing great cosmetic dentistry. I also want to say few words about Doctor Camacho, who, by no chance, is your partner and with whom you work so well and in harmony together. Doctor Camacho is another beautiful human being turned into a dentist who was blessed with the art of root canals, I have had many before meeting him, unfortunately, but no one has ever been so delicate and yet sharply precise with his hands like him. I had never found a dental office where I was treated so well, so humanly, so respectfully and where I was actually looking forward to go to, knowing we would also have great laughs together. I keep telling my American friends that I found gold in Tijuana, I hope sooner or later they'll drop their lazy excuses and take the worthwhile trip.

"I was very impressed by the practical and well-organized qualities I found at Dr. de la Vega's office. Mr. Brown [see below], in his testimonial on the web site, describes most of these excellent qualities, such as almost no residual pain at all, which is always very appreciated, but I thought I'd add a few words.

Having their practice in the same office, indeed their chairs are only a matter of ten feet from each other, it makes for a very practical operation. In fact, partnering in such a way, as they describe quite nicely on their home page, makes for a great savings in time and cost, allowing the visiting patient to get work done in one visit, as was my case, rather than two or three.

I had a very excellent dentist a couple miles away, for the last five years, but when she became unavailable recently, the owner of my Volvo repair shop near L.A., offered me this new contact, and I was grateful for the change, as the work I needed would previously have required a hotel sleep over, since with the crown I needed, she would have been delayed, and had to call her partner in. Her work also was much, much faster ~ and way cheaper ~ than U.S. dentists, but still took much longer than Drs. de la Vega and Camacho, who did the work not just expertly, but with amazing speed. I was delighted by the total lack of pain I felt after the visit to Dr. de la Vega, as I had to have a lot of numbing done, even in the palate, to the area around the crown.

The whole encounter and visit took me two hours drive down and back, but the savings are really tremendous compared to anything I can find in the L.A. area, or anywhere else north of the border, for that matter.

There was an added benefit too, in that it came up that I was a professional musicia (when we shook hands and I mentioned that I was a pianist with a hand injury) it turned out that "el buen doctor" de la Vega had had a considerable career when he was young as a recording artist who played piano in a combo, and, as I had some background in that too, it made for a lively and engaging chat, with "notes," as we waited, in between procedures. Dr. Camacho came across to Dr. de la Vega's chair, and fitted me with a post for a crown, as soon as he had finished with his patient, and both did the work with amazing efficiency and speed, so that I was in and out well before an hour had passed. I got there early, and they saw me a little early, but were still thoughtful enough to apologize for the wait, which was really not really a wait at all.

The whole thing was a win-win situation, literally, for someone who sees them, and I shall be returning "pronto" for other work. There are many more specifics of the trip that pleased me, but covered well by others here, so I'll leave it at that, except to say I had a very enjoyable half hour walk back to the border, where I'd parked my car on the city streets of San Ysidro on the other side.

More like a vacation than a visit to the dentist!

I had Dr Ignacio de la Vega perform root canal and crown in Oct of 2010. I have never been happier.
Dr Eduardo Camacho assisted. Both men were friendly, professional and carefully explained every
procedure as they went along. These two gentleman did superior work. I had less residual pain than
ever before. Their office is small but very clean and comfortable. The prescription I had filled was
literally just a few doors down. For those, like me, who worried about getting the right dentist in Tijuana
because I couldn't afford US dentists in this economy, Dr de la Vega is a godsend. He stands behind his
work 100%. I felt compelled to write this to help ease the fear of anyone going thru a similar decision.

It is with great appreciation and respect that I write to you today.
As you know you helped me out with a dental problem that has plagued
me for years. My partial was ill fitting causing a huge embarrassment
to me. So much so, that I could not smile or even speak without
humiliation. I have seen so many dentists who offered expensive
solutions and doctors providing new appliances which were
progressively worse that what I started with. After so many attempts
with so many doctors I convinced myself there were no easy, quick, or
affordable solutions.

Then I happened on your web site. It was not flashy even a little
understated. Some other sites promised the world and seemed a little
exaggerated. I decided to send photos etc. to as many dentists as I
could relative to my situation using email. You responded quickly
calling me on the phone and patiently listened to my story. I felt
assured by you that there was a quick easy and affordable solution. I
was impressed by your English but more than that I felt your sincerity
and honest desire to be helpful.

Your directions on the web site were very easy to follow. When I
arrived at your office I immediately felt warmth and genuineness in
your friendly greeting. I spent the day with you and in your waiting
room as your clients came and went. The familiar, affable atmosphere
was apparent in all of your dealings and your clients attitude and
appreciation characterized their excellent treatment.

Once you assessed my situation you confidently explained what was
necessary. I am sorry that I was a little apprehensive but I had
heard assurances and confidence before in so many dentists over the
years.

I decided to see what would happen, mainly because I was desperate but
also because of your friendly honest approach. You got right on it,
getting my lab work started immediately. At the same time we started
the longer term issues concerning my total dental health.

I was amazed at the efficiency and immediacy of your combined strategy
and approach. It may sound crazy but you reminded me of a general
deploying forces in what turned out be one successful campaign. When
the efforts you put forth on my behalf were revealed or when you
applied the improved partial I was so pleasantly surprised. Finally
my smile was as much or more than I ever expected. Where many others
promised you delivered. Where delays and missteps added up to years
you were able to achieve superior results in hours. Where others
offered their best excuses with an abundance of attitude you offered
humble superior ability and results.

Am I happy? You betcha.

On the way home on the train I was able to smile at everyone I could
make eye contact with, I talked confidently with strangers and
laughter with children.

My life is better for having met you and I know everyone you meet is
enriched in one way or another.

I do have one complaint..............now that my smile looks so great
I am noticing my wrinkles do not match my perfect smile. I need
plastic surgery for my face to match my teeth. Please tell me you
have a friend that does face lifts. Please recommend me to him/her.

Bravisimo, doctor!

I have already recommended you to a friend of mine here in Eugene who
needs upper dentures, as well as some work on a few of his lower
teeth. He was quoted the outrageous price of $5700.00 for his upper
dentures alone!

I was seen by a doctor here in the states since my return, who
examined my mouth carefully and declared "he (meaning you, Dr. Vega)
did a great job! The mexican plan, I'll have to remember that!"

Thanks to you and your colleague, this procedure I so dreaded was
actually the most tolerable aspect of the entire ordeal. I doubt very
seriously that any gringo dentist could have inspired such courage in
me! You are, without exception, the best dentist I've ever worked
with, and there have been many.

Sabes, tenia muchisimo miedo antes de nos reunimos! Pero

such high quality work done; pain levels from the time of the road
accident and bloodshot eyes have gone away now as a result of your
work.
      
Anyway thank you in advance for your assistance in this matter and I
must say that I enjoyed your sense of humour and appreciated your
dedication to your work.I found your area to be very safe to walk
around and it felt like a small town just there,especially with the
low traffic volume.
  At home here in Canada we are just starting to make the beginnings
on a new pond in our garden  which will no doubt be a delight to the
white-tail deer which roam through.

    Tijuana is considered to be the dental capital of the world. There are over 3,500 practicing dentists in the city, yet the majority of their clients come from across the border. The same is true on a smaller scale in other border towns such as Ojinaga, Juarez, Nogales, Mexicali, and El Progresso. At some dental clinics, over 80% of the clients are U.S. citizens.

      The reason for this phenomenon is obvious. American medical costs are the highest in the world, and dentistry is no exception. At corporate-run HMOs, profits are the primary concern and hospitals and pharmaceutical companies keep prices on a ever-rising spiral. Because of this, American insurance rates are also the highest in the world. Not surprisingly, nearly 50 million people in the richest country in the world do not have health insurance of any kind.

      To make matters worse, most dental “insurance” is only a system of reduced fees agreed to by dentists to get new patients. Dental care ranks among the most needed and least funded of any other health service available to Americans. Extensive corrective and reconstructive dentistry can run into the tens of thousands of dollars in the U.S., but the same quality treatment can be found in Mexico (and other countries in the world) at drastically reduced rates.

      In August 2004, I was faced with over $5,000 in dental work on my upper front six teeth. I had what I thought was great dental insurance from Blue Shield, but despite the fact I had visible caries and cracked teeth, they refused to cover caps and insisted I continue to repair the teeth with off-color plastic fillings that eventually would leave little good tooth left. I appealed their decision, but after due course the work recommended by my American dentist to save my teeth was deemed “cosmetic.” This is the big loophole in dental coverage, and insurers take advantage of it to deny procedures that obviously make more sense and cause the patient less grief and pain in the long run. Of course, patchwork filling does open up a whole new world of root canals and implants, which can cost up to $10,000 each!

Luckily, a friend in San Diego told me about the Tijuana dentists. Thousands of San Diegans cross the border for dental work every year and save millions of dollars. I got on the Internet and quickly found a few dozen likely dentists, but I really made my final decision based on direct phone calls. I found many dentists offering $125 caps, but the material turned out to be bonded plastic or porcelain bonded to steel. I ended up paying $175 a tooth for six caps of porcelain bonded to high noble metal. He normally charges from $175 to $250 per cap. America dentists charge from $750 to $1,500 for a single cap.

      As an added bonus, the man doing the work would be one of the best dentists I had ever seen. Dr. Ignacio de la Vega (shown at left and below right) graduated from the University of Gruadalara and has over 25 years experience in dentistry. His mother is British, and he speaks perfect English. In fact, he is a wonderful conversationalist, who makes the work fly by. Intelligent and articulate, he is also humble and caring. Dr. de la Vega works with a true artist who fashions the porcelain caps. His name is Antonio Gonzalez, and he is a 30 year craftsman with a lab in the same building as Dr. de la Vega. They form a great team who can perform all kinds dental work, including crowns, bridges, dentures, fillings, extractions, whitening, cleaning, veneers, implants, root canals, and gum treatment. My only caution would be that sometimes Dr. de la Vega gets rushed and tries to handle several patients at once, but of course, that is no different than most American dentists. he

      To "cap" or "crown" a tooth, the dentist grinds the original tooth down to a post or cone shape, and creates a sculptured replacement tooth which is cemented to this surface. It took about half a day to accomplish this and make a temporary set of teeth. With the careful injections, I felt no pain whatsoever. A week later, I came back to have the caps clued in place. That was two years ago and I have had no problems at all. Unlike most American dentists, Dr. de la Vega agreed to put in caps that were two shades whiter than my normal front teeth. Then he whitened my surrounding teeth to match as close as possible.

      There are many other fine dentists in Tijuana. But you have to be careful and shop around. Ask questions and use the Internet for your research. Below is Dr. de la Vega’s contact information. When calling Mexico from the United States, dial the international code and country code, 011-52, then the 2 digit city code and 6 digit local phone number.

 Traveling to Tijuana

The border crossing at San Ysidro is less than 20 miles south of downtown San Diego and is open 24 hours a day. The San Ysidro parking facility houses an information center for Tijuana/Baja California bound travelers and also serves as a Tijuana shuttle terminal. Farther east, the Otay Mesa crossing is open daily from 6 A.M. to 10 P.M. A third border crossing in Tecate, California, is open from 6 A.M. to midnight. Visitors to the northern part of Baja California do not need passports or tourist cards if staying in the country for 72 hours or less. If you plan to stay longer or travel beyond Ensenada, you'll need to obtain a tourist card. This document is free of charge; proof of U.S. citizenship is required. The three most popular ways to get to Tijuana from the United States are:

• Bus: (800) 231-2222. Greyhound Bus Lines offer daily service from San Diego to Tijuana. Costs between $5 and $9.

• Car: Drive to the border, park at one of several pay parking lots on the U.S. side and walk across. Parking rates average $2 per half-hour or between $6 and $10 for 24 hours. If you plan to take your car into Mexico, you must purchase Mexican automobile insurance prior to crossing the border. Most U.S. policies are not valid in Mexico. In the unfortunate event of an accident, only a Mexican insurance policy will be recognized as valid. You can get insurance by phone at Border Insurance Services (800-332-2118). It is the largest and most reliable Insurance Company in Mexico.

• Trolley: (619) 231-8549. The San Diego Trolley is an excellent alternative; regular service is provided from downtown San Diego. The trip takes approximately 45 minutes and the cost is $1.75.
